Maria Shriver’s California Women’s Conference

10/25/2007 By Patricia V. Davis 11 Comments

I have been away from the computer, volunteering at an extraordinarly empowering and non-partisan women’s conference, called the California Women’s Conference. Despite it’s title, women and men, leaders and activists from all over the world, participated. I loved it, found it to be simply ‘life-affirming.’ There’s nothing we can’t do if we really want to do it! You can read all about it, if you’re interested, on the link.

I didn't realise you lived there. I would have loved to have met you, of course! I stayed on the Queen Mary. (I swear I think there are ghosts on that boat, seriously) So, how are you coping with the fires?

wow! I started watching the videos of the conference. It looks like it was amazing! 🙂 When I have some time, I am going to go through the whole thing.
I love the feeling of empowerment that I felt from what I saw and heard already.

It would be extremely wonderful if we could all somehow meet up there next year.

i don't live in LBC, actually. i live in orange county… about 20-25 mins away. not too far. :)the fires haven't been that close to us… close to steve's workplace, which made me a tad nervous… so it was close, but not that close… if that makes any sense. the smoke's been awful, though. mia and i have been inside for the past 4 days. mia is going stir crazy, poor girl. i'm just glad that everyone i know and love is safe and their homes didn't burn down… 🙂

I think that's a very good way to look at it. But, now I'm hearing "arson" just like the fires in Greece that I wrote about this summer and it makes me so mad. People's homes burned for no reason and I think seven people dead so far.

yes… arson… i can't believe it. people are SO retarded. bet they were male. 18-25. only they would be stupid enough to do it… my brother's in that age group and it's SO something he and his stupid friends would do.

Oh — the Beloved was supposed to attend this but the fires here in San Diego prohibited her from going. She was so bummed — she was really looking forward to it.

We lost several conference volunteers due to the fire, as well. Luckily there was a surplus of them this year. It must have been a disappointment to her that she couldn't attend. I wonder if she knows that she can see some of the talks, on the californiawomen.org website and also at mariashriver.com.?

Sounds like it was a very empowering experience. You all were fortunate not to be affected by the fires which were horrific. True, there were those who were attending the conference but their attempts were almost futile because of it. I truly hope this was not a case of arson. I remember what you said about the fires in Greece and it sickens me.
On a lighter note, I haven't gone through the entire video yet but I am sure it will be worth the watch.

    Thanks for sharing.

It turns out that one fire was started by a 13-year-old boy playing with matches. 21 homes were lost as a result. They're still investigating arson suspicions. We could see the smoke from the fires as the plane flew over southern Cal. Many women and many volunteers could not attend the conference as a result.
